Professional Summary: Ed Modell is an Executive and Leadership Coach specializing in coaching leaders of organizations to resolve high-intensity conflicts in a constructive and forward-looking manner. Ed has a unique background as an attorney, an executive with a high- tech environmental company, a skilled mediator, a non-profit Board member and legal advisor, a trainer of conflict management coaching, the Ombudsman for the State of Maryland Judiciary Department and former President of the International Coach Federation (ICF) with membership of some 22,000 coaches in 110 countries around the world. Ed’s primary focus is working with executives individually and with teams that are experiencing conflict in the workplace. He has a particular interest in multicultural work environments and dealing with cross- cultural and diversity issues. Coaching Philosophy: Ed believes that coaching and being coached are hard work but well worth the effort because coaching enables clients to transform their lives in ways that they may have thought unachievable. Ed's Professional Experience Includes: Co-facilitating with a retired U.S. Ambassador a dialogue of Israeli and Palestinian experts on water rights and related issues that resulted in a preliminary agreement. Serving as the Executive Director of the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy, an international non-profit peace- building organization. Coaching business executives in Ireland, Bulgaria and Israel on marketing, business development and succession planning issues. Conducting “Climate Assessments” for organizations to identify conflicts and other problem areas and to recommend actions to improve the workplace environment. Over 30 years as a practicing attorney in Washington, DC representing clients before the Courts and Government Agencies on a variety of matters, including energy, mental health, telecommunications and social justice issues. Business and Leadership Experience:
Ed was the Vice President and General Counsel for a high- tech environmental company, where he negotiated contracts with strategic partners both in the US and in Europe which resulted in the construction and operation of a pilot facility in Karlsruhe, Germany. Ed also was the President and Chairman of a 16-member Board of the International Coach Federation, which has its headquarters in the US and maintains Regional Service Centers in Belgium, Australia and Argentina. In that capacity, Ed regularly dealt with difficult issues involving the leadership of many of ICF’s chapters throughout the world and he has mediated disputes for ICF chapters in Europe and Asia. Ed also is the President of a bi- partisan non-profit organization in his home community of Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. The organization, Citizens Watch, focuses on environmental and land use issues related to the health and quality of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Certifications: Ed holds a Professional Certified Coach credential from the International Coach Federation and a Board Certified Coach credential from the Center for Credentialing and Education. He is also a licensed attorney in Washington, DC. Education: Ed earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia Law School. He also is a graduate of the coaching certification program of the Coaches Training Institute.
